Punctuating Sentences

There is often some confusion about the terms "sentence type" and "sentence structure".   Unfortunately, the terms are often used interchangeably when they do, in fact, mean different things.

Sentence type refers to the purpose of the sentence - what does the sentence DO in the larger context of the piece.

Sentence Structure

Sentence structure refers to the way a sentence is constructed - the phrases, clauses, punctuation and conjunctions that make up the sentence(s).

The final structure of the sentence - the complex-compound sentence - is often left out because it is a mash up of two structures.  It is, however, important to remember that the fourth structure does exist, particularly as students move into secondary school and the expectations are that writing becomes increasingly detailed, complex and expressive.
