Supervised Learning Support Space

Supervised Learning Support (SLS) Space

Room 202, next to the Learning Commons/Library

SLS Space FAQ

What IS the Supervised Learning Support Space?
  • A quiet workspace where students can work independently on academics.
  • A space where students can access technology (laptops, internet)*, and a B&W printer.
  • A space where students can get academic assistance from the supervising teacher and/or EA.

* There is physically distanced seating for up to 30 students, and a Classroom on Wheels (COW) Computer Cart with up to 25 laptops. Availability of laptops depends on the number of students in the room, the work focus of the students in the room at any given time, etc.
Who gets to use the SLS Space?
The SLS Space is primarily geared towards providing a quiet workspace for students in grades 10 - 12; PCSS understands that some students have limited access to technology at home, and/or transportation realities that make the new schedule a challenge.

Younger students may be assigned to the space by counselling or administration on a case-by-case basis.
How does a student get to access the SLS Space?
There are a few different paths that can bring a student to the SLS Space.

Scheduled
  • A parent/guardian contacts the Sr. Counsellor and asks that their  grade 10 - 12 child/ward be assigned to the SLS for the half of the day when they are not in their assigned course classrooms or on particular days
  • Classroom / course teachers may recommend to counsellors/administrators (based on student progress in class) that a grade 10 - 12 student be assigned to the SLS Space in order to stay up to date on work, access technology, etc. during a spare or during the half of the day when the student is not in their assigned course classrooms.
Drop In
  • Grade 10 - 12 students who have a space may choose to drop in and access the space when/as needed, without being specifically assigned.
  • Grade 10 - 12 students who would like a safe, quiet place to work where they can access support and technology may choose to come to the SLS Space when/as needed during the half days they are not in their course classrooms.
Is the SLS Space right for me/my child/ my ward?
Your child/ward is:
  • in grade 10, 11 or 12,
  • is able to work independently,
  • OR is better able to work with focus and independently with some degree of structure and support,
  • does not access Learning Assistance support via an IEP or StSP,
  • does not have consistent/reliable access to technology (devices and/or internet connectivity) at home and is therefore struggling with the blended learning aspects of their coursework,
  • is not in a position to make use of the mid-day bus run/routes and needs to be at the school all day.
SLS Space Room Expectations
ALL PCSS School Policies apply
(and attendance is tracked, including for students who drop in)
As with any other classroom/learning space in the school environment, students in the SLS Space must meet basic behavioural expectations.
While in the SLS Space, students are expected to:
  1. ... work quietly, with respect for other students in the room who need to be able to concentrate;
  2. ... be courteous towards all fellow students and staff, in what is said and done (including language choices);
  3. ... use school devices ONLY for academic purposes and with regard for keeping the units in good condition;
  4. ... use personal devices with respect for others in the room (i.e. low volume, use headphones, do not take pictures of other student etc.);
  5. ... observe physical distancing guidelines;
  6. ... sanitize their hands upon entering and before leaving the room;
  7. ... sanitize laptops when opening and closing (and returning) the units
  8. ... sanitize workspaces (tables, desks) before the end of the period;
  9. ... NOT wander the halls (any student IN the building must be in a supervised space with a staff member except when in transit between classes);
  10. ... let a staff member know where they are going if they need to step out (i.e. in case of an emergency like a fire);
  11. ... to clean up any messes or garbage they generate while in the room*;
  12. ... follow the instructions of school staff.

*Students may bring beverages or food (particularly since the room is available and staffed over the mid-day break, but there is no microwave, and students must not have open beverages or food items near school digital devices.
